Together (Scottish Alliance for Children’s Rights) is hosting a series of Zoom webinars in June and July 2020 on the State of Children’s Rights in Scotland. These webinars form part of our countdown to the next examination of the UK’s progress in implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Together will be submitting a report in autumn 2020 to highlight the priority children’s rights issues in Scotland and inform the UN Committee’s review.
Recommendations by the UN Committee can be powerful tools in influencing legislation and policy. Since the UN Committee’s 2016 review, the Scottish Government has addressed recommendations including giving children equal protection from assault and raising the age of criminal responsibility, as well as making a strong commitment to incorporate the UNCRC into Scots law within the next year.
This seminar will explore Disability, Basic Health and Welfare and will focus on some of the key issues highlighted in Together’s State of Children Right’s 2019 report (access the report here).
The aim of the webinar is to draw on participants’ experience and expertise to identify Scotland’s progress, where improvements are needed and any emerging issues surrounding disability, basic health and welfare. Webinar findings will be used to help shape a submission to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in November 2020 ahead of the UK’s review in 2021-2022.
The webinar will last approximately 1.5 hours and follow the format below:
Introduction to the UNCRC reporting process and how civil society organisations can influence this.
Smaller group discussion on thematic issues. These will be led by our member organisations with specific expertise in the area.
Delegates will have a choice of the following breakout groups (places will be allocated on a first come first served basis):
Each group to share their three priority issues and reasons for choosing these.
Together will use the data shared in the webinar to help shape our autumn 2020 report on children’s rights in Scotland.
The webinars will take place online via Zoom and are open to both Together members and non-members. If you would like to attend the webinar, then please register your interest and we will get back to you by Thursday the 25th of June to confirm whether you have been allocated a place. Priority will be given to Together members.
***Registration is open until 12pm on Thursday the 25th of June***
